Volume one takes us from the ravages of the Great War to the outbreak of the Second World War, when Harry must decide whether to take up a place at Oxford, or join the navy and go to war with Hitler's Germany. But it will be another twenty years before Harry discovers how his father really died, which will only lead him to question: who was his father? Is he the son of Arthur Clifton, a stevedore who worked in Bristol docks, or the first born son of a scion of West Country society, whose family owns a shipping line? "Only Time Will Tell" covers the years from 1920 to 1940, and includes a cast of memorable characters that "The Times" has compared to "The Forsyte Saga". The epic tale of Harry Clifton's life begins in 1920, with the chilling words, 'I was told that my father was killed in the war'. The "Clifton Chronicles" is Jeffrey Archer's most ambitious work in four decades as an international bestselling author. ![]() ![]() Seriously, there were moments when I laughed out loud so that my neighbours were probably very confused. It’s like gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay. There are other queer characters! Background lesbians! I love me some background lesbians. Okay, so I spent the whole thing wanting to go up to Simon and say, “The word you’re looking for is bi,” but that was a small matter. ![]() I mean, I guess that was to be expected, because of the whole Simon / Baz thing that Cath is obsessed with in Fangirl, but I wasn’t sure if Rowell was going to go the subtext route. I was not meant to be buying books (because I’m skint) or reading non-uni-related books (because I’m behind on work after having been in bed for two days with the flu) but I broke both those rules because I wanted to read this and it was so pretty and I was just so excited and IT WAS TOTALLY WORTH IT. Now you know this is going to be positive. It’s sort of a mixture of the fanfic that Cath is writing in that book, and the actual series she’s writing about, and it’s just awesome. ![]() The advantage of being tremendously late to the Fangirl party was that I didn’t have to wait so long for the Carry On party to start.įor those who aren’t aware, Carry On is based on the fictional fictional characters of Simon and Baz and Penelope and Agatha and others who are mentioned in Fangirl. When I read Fangirl, the main impression it made on me was the sure knowledge that if a Simon Snow series did actually exist, I would read it in a heartbeat. ![]() ![]() ![]() Laura Benét employed herself as a social worker, newspaper editor, poet and author. And it becomes apparent that Ake Falck's "A Time in the Sun," which opened yesterday at the Carnegie Hall Cinema, has a visual program, a pleasant one, to match its decently sentimental story. The story concerns a handsome, successful young writer who meets a lovely young nurse who is dying of Hodgkin's disease. Somewhat later, atter we know the characters, it devotes such close attention to fragments of human anatomy that it seems at times to be recalling those "geography of the body" movies that in provincial film societies used to substitute for art (and sex). But much later, after the hero and heroine have married and settled down to her pregnancy, the area of vision has widened to include rarely less than a bed, a body, or a corner of a cozy apartment.
